It is time not to think in terms of growth but in terms of preservation.
What we have, one of the last parcel of the earth's lung, is not for sale, it is irreplaceable. Sustainable growth, two antinomian adjectives to my humble opinion, as fashionable as it is does not make sens, to grow, you need more, to have more you need to take, when you have taken, it is gone for ever and it is especially true when you are speaking of space. You can probably make a sandwich with one hundred dollars bills, but I doubt the nutritious quality of it...

Another dream dashed that the government might listen. At least you thought in the wake of climate change, self-sufficiency and water conservation that there is some revision in the process of preventing more self-sustaining forest land being exchanged for concrete. All the carbon-tax hoopla does not make up for the loss of true, natural experience. Public hearings are a must to pay respect to people who are effected by short sighted government decisions. |

I have been to this area many times. It is so beautiful up there and a great place to get away not to mention the wildlife. I think we have enough towns, where people can build, on this island that areas like Jordan River should be protected so that everyone may enjoy them the way they are supposed to enjoyed. |

Mr. Coleman's policies have placed cities such as Port Alberni on the endangered list of forestry communities in BC. They have been a major cause of the destruction of our economic well being, ecosystems and watersheds, and a testament to this government's unwillingness to communicate with the communities it is supposed to represent in order to act for the common good. No words can adequately express our dismay, disappointment, anger and disgust regarding Mr. Coleman's multiple breach of the public trust. |

It is totally unacceptable that this Minister allowed WFP to remove land from the TFL and put this property up for sale. He should have learned from his mistake in releasing TFL lands in the Alberni Region and the Court decision that ruled against that move! As a Professional who has worked for 30 years in the Forest industry, I feel strongly that this Minister should be removed from his position, and the Primier is remiss in not doing so! |

The remaining old-growth forests of BC must be preserved.
The Government has the power to do this, but persists in
allowing logging of these forests. We need a new Minister

My grandfather was the first horse logger in Nakusp at the turn of the century. He would be so distressed at the total mismanagement of our forests and the stupid thoughtless 'giveaways' of our logging tenures to the huge multi national companies ever looking for this type of ignorance in the industry to make more profits off the backs of our forestry communities throughout our province. Leaving broken lives and hopeless futures for the hardest working people in our depleted province.
The present BC Liberal government is the worst we have yet experienced. Heartless, arrogant, and ever racing to leave no natural resource in tact.
Mr. Coleman has played a major role in this tragedy!! He MUST RESIGN.

The greater good for the greatest number of people should be the mantra of government. Decisions that benefit the few corporate players are not in the interest of the populace nor of the economy as a whole. Sustainable harvest = steady employment (from logging to processing to manufacturing); old growth protection = tourist dollars + possible future research in many areas. Bulldozing hectacres of forests for subdivisions does much environmental harm, and in the end economic harm. Short term decisions do not make for sustainable living. The government needs to look beyond the next election and make decisions that may be hard for their corporate financiers to swallow, but that will benefit Canadians as a whole. Trees are more than just potential lumberjack jogs. They are economic and environmental security. |

The decision to delete 28,000 hectares from the Western Forest Products' tree farm license is just
too Rich for my blood, which curdles when I think of the resulting devastation of our precious forests here on Vancouver Island and elsewhere. If Rich Coleman has so little regard (which is obvious) for the beauty and well-being of BC's forests and people, then what on earth is he doing with his current portfolio?? Or perhaps this is why he was appointed to Lands and Forests in the first place, to make sure that his interests would parallel and benefit corporate coffers, as seems to be the case with just about everything the current BC government has been doing. The only 'liberal' thing about this government is their misuse of taxpayers' funds and their disregard for humanity and the natural environment. Enough is enough! |

We have charged the government with the responsibility of managing our forest land as a natural resource, not creating real estate opportunities for corporations.
If WFP does not have the creativity to remain viable in the forest industry during this challenging time, then it needs to step aside and let someone else try. It is not OK to change the game. Real Estate development is NOT a forest product. |

B.C. and it's Forest Minister should be following the example of Scandanavian countries regarding sustainable forestry policies and procedures. B.C. has a chance to be truly green and be on the forefront of sustainable/green initiatives and industries rather than just paying lip service to it. Why is Gordon Campbell pretending to be "green", hopping on the carbon credit bandwagon and yet still pushing oil and gas exploration - a huge carbon emitter. Premier Campbell and his forest and environment ministers should be setting up progams and incentives for sustainable, community based forestry and other industries such as wind, tidal and geothermal power. We may only be in the "best place in the world" for a short time if the current policies are continued. May I also take this moment to say that allowing private companies to dam hundreds of small rivers is also insanity. One large hydro project (i.e. Site C) would be far less of an impact than spoiling hundreds of small rivers and their ecosystems with road and hydro line access, not to mention the recreation values for hikers, fisherman and kayakers to name a few.....then allowing these private companies to take all the profit and keep out the public....whose land it is! Are you all insane!! You are selling out from under the public's feet our province's precious resources. What legacy are you leaving the next generation so that a very few can get rich?? |

The current B.C. "Liberal" government has consistently favoured short term corporate interests over the long term interests of the citizens of the province, to say nothing of the long term health of the forests.
With specific relation to forest policies, we have seen firstly the cancellation of longstanding policy which made it mandatory for timber companies to mill the logs they were cutting in the local area, thus creating many jobs which have now been exported by allowing timber companies to cut logs and export them to US mills for processing, at great profit to the companies and devastation for the many small B.C. towns which were dependent on the milling jobs. Even if, as the government suggest, many of these mills were obsolete and inefficient, the forest companies should have modernized them, or paid a large penalty price to the province to get permission to shut such mills down. This government, in "helping" the companies tilted their policies totally to favour the companies with no penalties involved. They've repeated this form of disguised subsidization of the companies with the Western Forest land deal which was done with no real consultation with the public, or with any real debate in the legislature. Rich Coleman is a disaster as a minister and he is quite representative of a government which has no idea of what goes on in the province outside the lower mainland. I could go on, but I'm sure you get the idea. |

Dear Mr. Coleman, You have proven over time that you believe B.C. to be your private property with which you can do whatever is best for you. The time has come that our province has to be managed with responsibility and that we preserve our valuable old forests as national treasures. You have been voted in by the people and should therefore also listen to the people and not to big money grabbing corporations. In the end you will have to answer to your wrong doings. If you feel you cannot do a more farsighted job, then maybe it is better for you to let someone else make these decisions, someone who carries more social responsibility and has a stronger tie to the beauty of our province. As a carpenter and woodworker, I deal with the products of our forest industry every day. I build houses with plywood that was made overseas, with OUR trees, and then sold back to us...this is totally unsatisfactory, seeing that millworkers here need the work of producing such products as plywood, so that their families and our own national economy can thrive. I demand the end of raw log exports, and I am not the only one. Everywhere you go, you see signs which read, "Ban Raw Log Exports". Obviously, the Canadian people want to keep the wood, and the work, here at home. Let's have a referendum, and let the people decide by voting, as in a true democracy, whether or not they want to denude our forests for the sake of golfcourses and condominiums...the more timber we send offshore, the more we have to cut to satisfy our own needs. |

Is there no incentive to manage the forests wisely? The short-sighted solutions I've seen practised in BC for the past decade are leading to a loss of one of BC's biggest treasures. The old growth forests are irreplaceable, exporting raw logs is denying local people work and putting crown timber land up for sale without public consultation is outrageous.
Already we have a province that is riddled with barren clearcuts, ravaged by pine beetles and dotted with shut-down mills. What's next? A desert? |

MR. Coleman,
You have failed to come up with any justification for your forestry policies. You have taken land that belongs to BC taxpayers and are for our use and sold them. I feel that it is absolutely immoral and illegal for you to do so. Besides the degradation of the forest, I do not support any of the kind of development that is being proposed. We need to save these areas to sustain the ecology of the forest and also to sustain ourselves by having access to these beautiful areas to recharge our spirits and souls. There are not enough of these areas left. Also, with the devastation of the pine forests by the pine beetle and the increased carbon emissions due to their decomposition, it is even more essential for our planet to keep this areas in as a pristine condition as possible. We need a forestry minister who has the best interests of the forest at heart. You do not qualify. |

The forests are not a financial resource for exploitation by those who happen to hold the most recent paperwork claiming ownership. They are essential to the health and well being of our global ecosystem. Grow up and respect the forests as the precious "oxygen-producing beings" that they are. Shame on anyone who disrespects this majestic and irreplaceable gift by "cashing it in" for short term profit, to our long term detriment. Forestry can be a sustainable activity, but it requires vision, patience, care and respect, not profiteering based on primative quarterly accounting.

Rich Coleman is a fraud and a failure as Forest Minister. He's more interested in "trade" than in protecting the forests and jobs in this province. There is no excuse for clearcutting in this day and age. Logging should be done selectively and the logs milled here in the province so that there will always be jobs and benefit to the people in this province. Instead he lets the corporations destroy the land by clearcutting, ship the raw logs out of the country so the mills all have to close down, then they get to sell off the land to foreign developers for tacky subdivisions. |

Forest Lands must be held in such a manner that they survive market fluctuations. Forest Companies are only interested in timber production; this is their bottom line. Governments' role is to ensure that timber lands survive and thrive as an ecosystem. Selling timberlands for development, especially residential use, is foolish. If you cannot do the job honestly, then you should not been in the job. If an emplyee acted the way you have, he/she would have been fired on the spot. So what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Be an honest man for a change and not a mouse and do the right thing for B.C. Resign now. |

Mr. Premier - I have little faith in your government to do the right thing and give another more able MLA the Forestry portfolio. I'm signing this petition in yet another futile attempt to get you and government to do something more for this province than providing an expensive sideshow of the 2010 Olympics. Many forestry communities are dying while large timber leaseholders become land developers and abandon the public trust that was provided to them by your government to maintain BC's forests for the future of our children and grandchildren. |

reduced reforestation programs, increased raw log exports....the latest from Antler Creek, Sproat Lake, selling off crown land, TFL's just so the company can pull out, reduced monitoring of stream logging,.....if we allow the current forestry practices to continue we will not have a forest industry so why have a minister to adminster a non-existent forest. You are not representing the public ...so resign. |

Minister Coleman has betrayed the public trust, the interests of forest workers, ecosystem integrity and perhaps even the Forest Act itself, and must resign or be removed. He has never come close to explaining why he released Western Forest Products lands from TFLs in southern Vancouver island, where we are now faced with urban sprawl from Sooke to Port Renfrew in an area comparable in size to Greater Victoria. |

Mr Coleman has betrayed the trust of British Columbians in his flagrant disregard for the small forest worker and his signing over huge tracts of forest land into private and corporate hands thus jeopardizing our future ecology and economy. Richard Coleman is the latest in a long line of business representatives who use the power of the legislature to push through measures to ensure private profit and public risk. The corporations take away the money and society as a whole pays the costs. By seperating responsiblity from profit, wealthy investors can ruin a society with impunity.
In some ways, it is unfair to single out Rich Coleman, as he is only one of many anti-peopl-pro-corporation legislators that our province is cursed with.
British Columbia belongs to it inhabitants not corporations and their government agents, like Coleman. |

Minister Coleman is one of the least deserving of the title "Right Honourable". He has lied to and decieved the people of every district of British Columbia, and failed entirely in every task that is the responsibility of a Forestry Minister. Failure to protect forests, jobs, communities and public lands means that Minister Coleman does not hold the confidence of British Columbians, and has actually breached the duties he swore to perform in the forming of the new government. His resume is a pathetic failure to achieve even one of the modest tasks assigned to a Forestry Minister in one of the most naturally rich areas for forestry in the known universe. |

I work in the forest industry and now longer can work at home. The Liberals changes in forest policy have given too much control to the corporations with no regard to how it affects forest communities. They are still logging in Port Alberni but alot of the wood gets exported and they do not want to hire local people because local people are concerned about the damage that is being done to the private lands now that they are removed from the TFL. |
